What is a Line trap?
Line traps are critical PLC components that direct carrier signals efficiently along transmission lines toward remote terminals, isolating them from disruptive station bus impedance variations.This ensures reliable PLC communication for mission-critical protection and telemetry.
Functionally, a line trap acts as a high-impedance parallel resonant circuit, precisely tuned to the carrier frequency (e.g., 30-500 kHz). This blocks carrier energy from entering the substation bus, forcing flow toward the remote line end. Simultaneously, its heavy-duty coil provides a near-zero impedance path for high-current power frequency (50/60 Hz) energy, maintaining grid power flow.
Once injected onto the line, the carrier signal experiences attenuation and noise during long-distance transmission. At the receiving terminal, an identical wave trap decouples the PLC signal for processing. Precise component selection and tuning of the wave trap, coupling capacitor, and line tuner are essential for optimal PLC channel performance across high-voltage transmission networks.
